Colorectal cancer—cancer of the colon or rectum—is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. About 51,000 people die from colorectal cancer each year.
But colorectal cancer is preventable, beatable and treatable. If everyone aged 50 years or older had regular screening tests, at least 60% of deaths from this cancer could be avoided.
Free Blood Stool Test (FOBT) Kits Available
SHDHD and the South Heartland Cancer Coalition are offering free FOBT kits to complete at home. Individuals recommended for testing include men and women who are 50-74 years of age. If someone in your family has had colon cancer, you might need to be tested before age 50, discuss with your doctor.
There are several types of screening tests and no single test is the ‘right’ one for everyone. The best test is the one that gets done! So talk with your medical provider about the benefits and risks of each screening option as well as your family history, personal risk factors and preferences to help determine which screening test is best for you
Screening Saves Lives! South Heartland encourages colon cancer screening for early detection.
